Improve your running performance with augmented reality

Anyone who enjoys running knows that it is easier to maintain and improve your performance when you have a running partner who is slightly faster than you and keeps you on track. Unfortunately, in today’s world – and with the long-term social distancing demands of COVID-19 – finding the right partner and coordinating races with others can be almost impossible.

Motivation when running alone

To meet this need, young Americans who have just graduated from high school have just launched the Ghost Pacer. It allows to race against an avatar in AR that only the runner can see. The Ghost Pacer is a pair of AR goggles, which is developed by a group of young graduates from Lakeside High School, the same high school Bill Gates attended in Seattle.

At the heart of the Ghost Pacer there is a mini-computer powerful enough for its environment, an ultra-bright LED, and a high-resolution augmented reality screen. The Ghost Pacer has an 800 mAh battery that can last up to 6 hours of continuous use and takes 1 hour to charge via USB-C. The display has a resolution of 1280 x 720 and a field of view of 30 degrees. In addition, it is water and dust resistant.

Its weight of only 90 grams and a maximum thickness of 10 millimetres ensure that no bulky headsets are required throughout the sporting experience. In addition, its patented optical system and the possibility of producing a realistic avatar in 3D space make these glasses an ideal tool for any runner.

Track your performance in real time

Integration with the Strava fitness application allows users to compete against virtual training partners who replicate the trajectories and speeds of their friends from previous training sessions, allowing athletes to “run together”, even separately.

The application, which is available for iOS and Android, also allows users to analyse the exercise history and, based on this data, create customised training sessions for them. There is also a Pro version of Ghost Pacer, which can connect to your Apple Watch or Garmin device to offer additional features such as customised workouts and heart rate integration, according to the developers.
