By creating an avatar from the personal data of thousands of Internet users, they aim to show how <\/span><b>digital technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has changed our daily lives and the construction of our identity. Martina Pizzigoni&rsquo;s <\/span><b>digital artwork<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is part of the official selection for the 2025 edition of the Recto VRso <\/span><b>immersive art<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> festival.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital identity vs. real existence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martina Pizzigoni is a multimedia artist. Originally from Italy, they now live and work in Austria, where they create interactive experiences. Their research explores the social context of our digitally-dominated society. They already presented their work at the Recto VRso festival last year, with the artistic duo they form with Alessia Fallica. Their digital work &ldquo;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I died on Facebook<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&rdquo; addressed the <\/span><b>notion of the virtual self<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and raised the question of its existence after our death in the real world. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martina Pizzigoni returns to the festival solo this year, to present their new interactive installation, &ldquo;(Very) Neural System&rdquo;, whose first prototype was exhibited in 2024 at the Elektron Festival in Luxembourg. In this work, Martina questions the <\/span><b>construction of our identity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a society that is becoming a slave to digital technology. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the dawn of time, our identity has been shaped by our environment and the standards imposed on us. Today, we spend more and more time online, and this has an impact on our identity and behavior. &laquo; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">behaviours. Individuals are unconsciously developing a technological intimacy and <\/span><\/i><b><i>dependence on digital devices <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&raquo;, explained Martina. &laquo; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The commodification of life experiences has become a prominent feature of the digital age, profoundly affecting our interactions and perceptions.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &raquo; <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"(Very) Neural System | 2024\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ff98HJme6sU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does our personal data really represent us?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To create this installation, Martina Pizzigoni <\/span><b>used personal data <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collected by major companies such as Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook. They had already used this process with &ldquo;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I died on Facebook<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&rdquo;, using commemorative accounts created on the social network and dedicated to real deceased people. Here, the artist has used this data to nourish<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.laval-virtual.com\/en\/virtual-avatars-the-future-of-immersive-interactions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the knowledge of a digital avatar<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The participant stands in front of a screen displaying the avatar, with whom they can interact. <\/span><b>Several technologies are mobilized<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make this dialogue possible: generative AI analyzes the spectator&rsquo;s sentences, captured by voice recognition, and generates the avatar&rsquo;s responses. Audio-face synchronization animates the avatar&rsquo;s lips to match its words, while motion sensors reproduce the participant&rsquo;s gestures.
