Interview

Volumetric Studio raises awareness in VR on environmental impact

Our world is changing and the impact of human activity can no longer be ignored. Immersive technologies can help to raise awareness about environmental changes. This is the mission that Volumetric Studio has given itself, which will be present at the Laval Virtual event on April 12-14, 2023 on booth A22. Interview with Kévin Reignier, 3D Studio Supervisor.

Can you present your company?

Volumetric Studio is a 3D studio oriented towards digital communication with the use of virtual reality and 3D in order to explain to the citizens of a city, to the residents of a changing neighborhood or to the users of public transportation, the upcoming projects that will impact their habits and their daily lives.

Our core business is above all to popularize the construction sector but also renewable energies with the primary objective of integrating and enhancing the data acquired by our engineering offices and our firm of surveyors. We produce digital supports allowing to follow operations or projects and to present them in an efficient, collaborative and aesthetic way.

What will you exhibit at Laval Virtual 2023?

We are offering visitors the opportunity to discover all of our experiences made in 2022 and 2023, including our new video game. It is a new educational and immersive adventure in virtual reality produced by Volumetric Studio. In Geodino, we are in 2050, and Humanity has disappeared because of its impact on the environment. The Earth has continued to warm up and the melting ice has caused the reappearance of the dinosaurs. In order to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, the user plays as a molecular traveler from the future, whose mission is to restore a well and a geothermal power plant. Geodino is aimed at 12-25 year olds in order to raise awareness of renewable energy among the younger generation.

Laval Virtual is celebrating its 25th edition this year. Do you have any memories to share since the first edition in 1999?

VOLUMETRIC STUDIO has only participated in the 2022 edition of Laval Virtual. We remember the Laval Virtual Awards evening that we particularly enjoyed.

The world of immersive tech was shaken up by the rise of the Metaverse and virtual worlds. What is your opinion on these?

These innovations are very interesting but we still have reservations about their application in a common good. Recently EpicGames released Unreal Editor for Fortnite, this is a first step towards what could be a successful Metaverse.

How do you see the VR world in 10 years?

We hope that virtual reality will be democratized over the years and that Cloud Computing solutions will allow users to acquire more and more headsets without having ultra powerful hardware (computer, console….).
