Specializing in the collection, transformation, and dissemination of knowledge, TAKOMA operates in the professional training sector. The company has integrated virtual reality and mixed reality tools to offer its clients immersive learning modules. TAKOMA is exhibiting at the Laval Virtual event to demonstrate how it uses immersive technologies in its client projects. We spoke with Alexis Massart, Head of XR and Training.

Can you tell us about Takoma?

Founded in 2000, TAKOMA is an engineering firm specializing in the automotive and aerospace sectors. From the very beginning, our goal was simple: to analyze and process raw data to produce training and documentation materials designed to support the entire lifecycle of your products and services, from the design phase through to after-sales support. The dedication of TAKOMA’s teams, our focus on customer relationships, and our commitment to excellence have enabled us to grow and expand into other sectors (Manufacturing, Luxury Goods, Banking, Insurance, and Mutual Insurance, Retail, and the Public Sector).

Today, we support our clients across five service areas: Knowledge Management Consulting, Training, Communication, Documentation, and Support Engineering. Our teams leverage the latest innovations to deliver modern, engaging, and measurable learning experiences.

What are you preparing for the Laval Virtual exhibition?

We will be showcasing our latest innovations in Mixed Reality, including an activity where users manually move markers to create safety zones, as well as our existing solutions, which will allow users to practice technical skills in various fields.

Will you be offering demos at your booth?

Yes, there will be demonstrations of various applications: a hands-on activity exploring engine components in split mode, as well as voice interaction with a robot using artificial intelligence in mixed reality; an activity exploring automotive batteries in mixed reality; an activity on selecting protective equipment in mixed reality; an activity on securing an electric vehicle in mixed reality; an activity on creating a safety zone by manually moving cones in mixed reality; and a virtual campus tour in virtual reality.

What innovation lies behind Takoma?

Our innovation lies in making the manipulation of zones in mixed reality simple, fun, and entirely controlled by hand tracking, without the need for physical controllers. The challenge was to transform a complex interaction—selecting, moving, resizing, or configuring zones in a 3D space—into a natural, intuitive gesture accessible to everyone.

In your opinion, how has XR transformed training?

XR has many practical applications in the industrial sector, particularly for facility maintenance, assembly and disassembly, commissioning procedures, and sensitive operations.

It enables a profound transformation of industrial practices by allowing complex operations to be simulated in immersive, realistic, and completely safe environments. It is becoming a key tool for standardizing procedures, reducing errors, and accelerating skill development. Learners operate within a digital twin of the field environment, which enhances retention, confidence, and the ability to react in real-world situations.

XR enables risk-free training without tying up expensive equipment or depending on the availability of the field site. Learners can repeat tasks as often as necessary, analyze their mistakes, and progress more quickly.

In complex and potentially hazardous contexts (gas, explosion risks, electricity, secure sites, etc.), training learners in environments that closely mimic the field but without real risk helps build confidence.

There are also financial savings to be had: in the aviation industry, for example, simulating aircraft handling avoids significant downtime costs while providing more frequent and comprehensive training… making it a highly worthwhile endeavor to recreate in an immersive environment.
