MocapLab is a studio dedicated entirely to motion capture. With over 300 projects to its name, it operates on a global scale, delivering top-tier motion capture solutions. Rémi Brun, the Founding Director, shares insights into motion capture, its evolution, applications, and role in the immersive technologies sector. MocapLab will be showcasing its expertise at the Laval Virtual VR/AR event on April 9-11, 2025.
Can you tell us more about your company?
MocapLab is one of Europe’s most innovative and experienced motion capture studios. Founded in 2007, we work for virtual reality (VR), video games, film, animation, science, artificial intelligence (AI) and art.
Our passion is to do our best to respect and enhance the movement of actors, athletes, dancers, gesture professionals, sign language professionals and more.
What will you exhibit at Laval Virtual?
We’ll be showcasing our latest work on the booth, the repertoire of our know-how, including very fine, extreme and complicated classic motion capture, with eye tracking, facial, very fine finger or sign language capture.
Are you planning any activities or demos at your booth?
We’ll be presenting a new use case. In Unreal, a 3-minute interactive 3D scene with two actors and complete motion capture (body, fingers, face, eye, accessories) edited very finely on Meta Humans.
I could also show you a scene that demonstrates the level of finesse and quality achievable with just motion capture, without post-animation. Motion capture, if you want it, can deliver a near-final result straight away.
How is your solution transforming your business field?
The quality of animated characters in virtual reality is a crucial factor in some VR experiences. Our approach aims to push the limits of motion capture and the associated technical chain, within the constraints of VR, to offer characters that are as welcoming, attractive and communicative as possible.
Sustainability and the environment are key topics of this century. How do you cope with these concerns in your XR technologies?
Motion capture is a solution that requires very little travel or heavy physical resources. Nevertheless, we remain vigilant. We have carried out a study of our carbon footprint with the Holi Company in 2023-2024 to assess our situation and identify areas for improvement.
