Every year, the Laval Virtual Awards ceremony rewards the best VR / AR projects of the year. In 2024, twelve prizes were given to highlight immersive companies and XR creators. Among the winning projects, Dexr Stage won in the category “#Startups”, a learning platform to easily create and share XR educational content. Interview with Leonard Tam, CEO of Dexr.
Can you introduce your company?
We are Dexr, a software venture in the edtech sector founded in 2023. We have developed a platform that makes creating and using XR learning solutions easy and affordable.
Our goal is to help educational professionals overcome the challenges of delivering training scenarios that are impractical, unsafe, or too costly. Using our unique authoring tool and research-based learning method, we ensure effective and engaging learning experiences.
Can you present the project that received a prize at the Laval Virtual Awards 2024 ?
Dexr offers an XR learning platform, Dexr Stage, which combines research-based instructional design with meaningful gamification in a user-friendly format. With Dexr Stage, creating XR learning content isn’t just for tech experts; it’s made easy for everyone, regardless of their technical background.
What sets Dexr Stage apart is that research guides our product design combining proven learning methods (Rosenshine, 4CID, self-regulated learning, …) with meaningful gamification (self-determination theory, mastery loops, habit building, …), resulting in engaging and effective learning solutions.
Dexr Stage is also a user-friendly, no-code authoring tool enabling non-technical subject matter experts to create scalable, affordable and effective XR learning solutions.
Besides, our solution is cross-platform, featuring a web-based authoring tool. Our learning applications are compatible with all major VR headsets, including Meta and Pico. They can also be accessed via a web browser with no extra steps required for the content creator.
What was your motivation when applying for the Laval Virtual Awards?
We were motivated by the opportunity to showcase our innovative solution to an international audience and gain recognition from industry experts. The Laval Virtual Awards are renowned in the XR community, and we saw this as a chance to highlight our product and unique approach while connecting with other pioneers in the field.
How did you experience your first participation in Europe’s biggest XR event?
Participating in Laval Virtual was an incredible experience! It was inspiring to see so many groundbreaking projects in one place and to engage with passionate professionals from across the XR ecosystem. The event provided us with valuable networking opportunities.
What were the benefits of this award given by a jury of international experts?
Winning the award significantly boosted our visibility within the XR and tech communities. It opened doors to new partnerships and gave us invaluable credibility when engaging with potential clients and investors.

The Awards ceremony’s theme was “magic”. If you could wave your magic wand and create the VR solution of your dreams, what would it be?
If we could wave a magic wand, we’d create a VR solution that’s not just immersive but truly life-changing for every learner. Picture this: every student gets their own personal virtual mentor who not only knows everything about the subject they’re teaching but also understands the student’s motivations, preferences, and skill level inside and out.
This mentor wouldn’t just teach; it would adapt to how the student learns best, providing encouragement when needed and challenging them when they’re ready. Whether it’s dissecting a virtual organism or building an engine, the experience would feel so real and engaging that students would forget they’re learning—they’d simply be doing, creating, and growing.
And it wouldn’t stop there. The platform would bring students together from all over the world to collaborate in ways that feel natural and exciting, breaking down barriers of geography, language, and even access to resources. With this, education would no longer be about what’s possible; it would be about what’s imaginable.
