Founded in Laval in 2021, start-up Olfy quickly made a name for itself by developing a device that lets you smell odours during a virtual reality experience. Rewarded as best start-up during 2022 edition of Laval Virtual, Olfy continues to grow. Interview with Clothilde Dubernet, Founder, who will present the latest development of her innovation during the first VR/AR event on April 10-12.

Can you introduce your company?

Created in 2021, Olfy developed an innovative solution that can add an olfactory dimension to virtual reality experiences. While over 75% of our daily emotions are linked to our sense of smell, immersive experiences in virtual reality don’t take this parameter into account. Olfy provides multi-sensor experiences by synchronising the diffusion of personalised fragrances with its clients’ virtual reality experiences.

What innovations will you be showcasing at Laval Virtual 2024?

We will present an olfactory system for virtual reality headsets. Our company has been existing for 2 years and we will show our latest developments. There will also be demonstrations on our booth.

The Olfy device is made of two cases that can be plugged on every virtual reality headset. They are used to diffuse scents synchronised with the immersive content. With that device, the sense of immersion in virtual reality experiences is higher.

What innovation do you think has most transformed the world of VR/AR?

I think that the miniaturisation and improvement of VR/AR tools have particularly advanced the world of VR/AR. In particular, thanks to improvements in the technologies inside the headset, such as 4k images.

The baseline of our 26th edition is “Act For The Future”. In your opinion, how can immersive technologies impact the world of tomorrow?

Immersive technologies, such as virtual reality and augmented reality, can play a significant role in shaping the future. For example, with the rise of remote working, immersive technologies can facilitate collaboration by bringing people together virtually in a shared environment. But also in the field of vocational training, where immersive simulations can be used to train professionals in fields such as medicine, aviation, security and so on. This offers a practical and realistic method of learning, reducing the risks associated with on-the-job training.
